| Influenced by local geographical conditions, cultural and economic factors, traditional streets and lanes formed the residential communities which are rich in local characteristics and cultural connotation. These streets and lanes reflect the characteristics of their time, especially in terms of structure, shape, building material, etc.Meanwhile, traditional settlements reflects the social network of that time. From the streets to the courtyards and to the buildings, the attribute of space has experienced a process from public to private. Traditional settlements are important social and cultural genes of the city.The influences of Urban planning and construction grow, while the importance of traditional settlements increase in cities. The protections and renewal of the traditional settlements are put on the schedule of urban development. In current urban renewal, the historical and cultural value is ignored. Many historical buildings have been torn down and just been rebuilt physically.To solve the problems above, this paper demonstrates the organic target of traditional settlements renewal, from the perspective of sustainable development. New renewal strategies are generated in material and non-material aspects, according to the analysis of the characteristics of the traditional residential space, current common renewal strategy, and specific circumstance of Shanxiang west area in Zhen Jiang.Related research has already been done on protection and renewal of traditional settlements, mostly focused on material aspect. Thus, in this renewal project, traditional settlements renewal strategies are put forward in economic, social, and cultural level.And practical measures are put forward in building process of district and courtyard.Hoping the traditional settlements are not only renewed in material aspect, but also protected in traditional living custom and lively atmosphere, in the process of urban development. |
