Since the implementation of reform and opening-up policy in China, study of simultaneousinterpreting is gaining momentum. However, SI with text and SI without text is a topic which isseldom covered in interpreting research. Little research has been conducted in this regard thatfocuses on problems arisen from the interpreting of SI with/out text, the coping tactics to theseproblems and different training methods of SI with/out text. Yet, restricted by or with the help oforiginal text, strategies employed in SI with text are sometimes different from those in SI withouttext. Hence, this thesis intends to conduct some preliminary exploration from this specificperspective to make some difference. This thesis is an empirical report. Six students with at least one year in SI learning are invitedto participate in the experiment. Through examining interpreting quality in SI with text and SIwithout text, the author aims to offer some guidance for training interpreters. The experimentshows that in different SI modes, allocation of interpreters’ attention is different; thereforedifferent strategies are employed to improve interpreting quality. In SI with text, with the help oftext, no many problems in comprehension will occur. But, restricted by text, simplification is hardto achieve. In SI without text, comprehension is the foundation of interpreting. Only wheninterpreters understand the passage, can they make full use of strategies like anticipation, segmentation, etc. From the perspective of teaching, SI with text is also expected to be a part ofSI training. Therefore, after advanced into SI without text, strategies can be employed in a flexibleway.
