This report is based on a guide interpreting task at the Yunnan NationalitiesVillage. The guide interpreter in the report performs the guide interpreting task inthree steps: task preparation, task performance and task evaluation. In the preparationstage, she attains the relevant background knowledge of the scenic spot and the client. In the performance stage, the guide interpreter is required to do two jobs. The first jobis to deliver to the visiting party the background information of the YunnanNationalities Village just before arrival at this scenic spot, while the second is tointerpret for the tourist and the tour guide on location. Then, both the tourist`sfeedback and the guide interpreter`s self-evaluation are collected in the taskevaluation stage. Specific problems and corresponding solutions are also described inthis stage. The transcript of the original text and its interpretation are included in theAppendix. Also, due to the particularity of this task, the focus of this report is placed on oneaspect, namely culture-specific words. Interpreting strategies of such words areexplored through describing and analyzing the guide interpreting task. In order tohave a better understanding of culture-specific wordings, the author (the guideinterpreter) studies those by analyzing the transcript and collecting relevant words. Then, this vocabulary is classified into three categories: those related to custom, thoserelated to religion, and finally those related to cultural architecture. The specificinterpreting strategies are analyzed depending on the two major purposes of guideinterpreting; that is, to convey source cultures and to make an interpretationunderstandable by tourists who come from the target cultures. Different meaningarticulation strategies are applied to the interpretation of the various culture-specificusages, which include words that are widely recognized, words that are derived fromlocal languages, and other culturally specific lexical sources.
