A Study Of The Anticipation Strategy In C-E Simultaneous Interpretation

Anticipation is a very common strategy in simultaneous interpretation. This report tries to explore the significance of anticipation in simultaneous interpretation and the author is convinced that the employment of anticipation is conducive to improving the quality and efficiency of the output.First of all, the report discusses the necessity of anticipation strategy in simultaneous interpretation from the perspective of theory based on Gile's Effort Model. In his theory, Gile considers simultaneous interpretation process as a pattern of mental processing which consists of three efforts, ie effort for listening and analyzing, effort for short-term memory and effort for the production of the target language. Anticipation could adjust the allocation of energy in each part and ease the burden of short-term memory so as to improve the quality and efficiency of the output of target language in SI. Second, the report has conducted some case analyses on the basis of the theory. The author has analyzed the sound recording of Chinese-English SI for five conferences and drew the conclusion of the existence for concrete anticipation methods which can be classified into intralinguistic anticipation and extralinguistic anticipation. Intralinguistic anticipation encompasses anticipations at the level of word, sentence and discourse.Extralinguistic anticipation contains anticipations of the live situation and encyclopedic knowledge. In conclusion, the author proposed some suggestions which are beneficial for improving anticipation ability of interpreter with some pragmatic experiences. These suggestions cover the following: the enhancement of one's language capacity of Chinese and English, a full understanding of the theme, professional terms and the presenter of the conference, as well as an appropriate grasp of the logic of the presentation and an accumulation of encyclopedic knowledge.
