Interpretation has become an increasingly important tool for exchanges betweenChina and other countries. More and more scholars gradually start to attach greatimportance to the study of interpretation quality. Some use translation theory to studyinterpretation. At government press conferences, speakers increasingly tend to useculture-loaded expressions. Cultural factors contain complex meaning. Interpretationof cultural factors is crucial for targeted audience’ understanding of the speaker.Interpreters should pay great attention to interpretation of cultural factors.Cultural factors can be interpreted word by word according to Chineseexpression; interpreters can also find the equivalent expressions or words which havesimilar meaning with Chinese expression. On the basis of domestication andforeignization proposed by Venuti, this thesis studies how the interpreters interpretcultural factors in Chinese-English interpretation by analyzing two consecutiveinterpretation texts. The study finds that when coming across cultural factors, interpreter tends to use foreignizing translation method. Such preference may havetwo reasons: one is that foreignizing translation can save time, and the other is thatthe equivalent cultural expressions they accumulated is limited so that they may notfind the proper one in a short period of time. As a result, they translate meaninggroup by meaning group so that targeted audience can get the rhetorical device usedin the culture-loaded expression. And they can understand the meaning ofculture-loaded expression. Together they can understand the very original Chineseexpression. On the basis of analysis above, the author thinks the use of foreignizingmethod can better help targeted audience understand the figure of speech it contains. In this way, they can understand the speaker as well as the Chinese audience do.
