Analysis Of Manipulation In The Translation Of China-related News

The rapid economic development makes China appear on the internationalstage as one of the big powers, and become the focus of the world. What aremajor events reported by foreign media? What role does China play in theinternational stage? What are the reactions western media towards China?Chinese people are long for these. Consequently, the translation of China-relatednews is one of the important channels for them to know western countries’attitudes towards China.With the upcoming of culture turn in1980s, many scholars both at homeand abroad have begun to study news translation from the perspective of culture.It is found that translation activity is not conducted in a vacuum but affected byextra-text factors such as the ideology. So does the translation of China-relatednews. However, there are a few researches studying the translation ofChina-related news from the perspective of manipulation.The thesis puts the translation of China-related news under the macrocultural dimension based on the Lefevere’s manipulation theory. The authorfirstly makes a data collection of China-related news which is translated inaccordance with VOA bilingual news in four years from2008to2011. It isfound that translators do not arbitrarily choose the translation of China-relatednews with different contents. The translation of China-related news mainlycenters on politics, economy, military and other fields. The author then explicitlyanalyzes how the translation of China-related news with different contents ismanipulated by translators according to the time division (two years as on stage).Finally, the author selects17examples within four years and makes a comparative analysis of E-C translation of China-related news. It proves that thelanguage forms in E-C translation of China-related news are manipulated bytranslators.To sum up, the author combines data statistical analysis with exampleanalysis for the purpose of proving that the manipulation is obvious in thetranslation of China-related news. It is not a simple conversion betweenlanguages but controlled by some constraints. The manipulation enablestranslators to effectively remain the advantages and avoid disadvantages in thetranslation of China-related news. Moreover, translators can better lead Chinesenews readers to consciously safeguard the national interests and keep the goodimage of the government in the international community. It has great practicalsignificance.
