Report On US-china Xinjiang Energy&Rail Industry Cooperation Forum-the Role Of Interpreter In Business Negotiation

This report is based on the “US-China Xinjiang Energy&Rail IndustryCooperation Forum, which has the participation of a commercial delegation led bythe US Ambassador to China and some Chinese enterprises and government officialsfrom related fields. I was presented as an interpreter of one American delegate.During his two-day visit, I served multiple tasks including liaison interpreting,whispering interpreting and consecutive interpreting.This report consists of four parts. The first part gives an introduction of theForum and the major tasks. The second part is about preparations. The third part isthe main body of this report, which analyzes the roles of the interpreter during thetask. The last part shows what lessons were drawn from the whole interpretingpractice. In the process of consecutive interpretation in business negotiation, theauthor finds that the communication effect is crucial for the negotiation result andinterpreters played different roles in business negotiation and this job needs theinterpreter’s good preparation in various ways. So the author takes a negotiationproject as an example to analyze and discuss the roles of interpreter in it and proposethe qualification the interpreter in business negotiation should have. In daily work,business negotiation interpreters need to have a good understanding of their roles inthe interpreting so that it is helpful for them to guarantee the customers interest andimprove service quality.
