A Report On An Interpreting Task For An Internet Company

This report is based on a Chinese to English consecutive interpreting taskconducted by the author in July when she was an intern in the Tencent Technology(Shenzhen) Company Ltd. During that time, the International Business Group held aseminar for several overseas representatives to help them learn more about thecompany’s development and WeChat’s performance outside China. The author mainlyfocuses on the speech of Justin, the manager of WeChat overseas operation group, toprobe into the problems an interpreter may encounter during the consecutiveinterpreting task on the topic of Internet industry and tries to find several strategiesand solutions accordingly.When retrospecting the task, the author emphasizes on the “pre-task preparation”period and divides it into three stages: long-term, short-term and the last-minutepreparation. The author describes how she prepares before the task at length so as tofurther discuss the impact of pre-task preparation on improving the quality ofconsecutive interpreting.In the case analysis, the author mainly chooses the first topic of the speech todiscuss some typical examples and analyze how different stages of preparationpositively affect the interpreting process.Through task description and case analysis, the author draws some conclusions asfollows:1. The pre-task preparation is of crucial importance to the interpretingprocess;2. Communication with the participants is helpful in knowing the specialrequirements of both sides to avoid unnecessary errors in interpreting;3. Topicsrelated to Internet industry are usually deep and hard-to-understand, therefore bothsolid interpreting skills and high mental quality are required.
