By comparing English and Chinese languages, studies show that speakers of the twolanguages often make use of different sentential structures to express the same meaningdue to the divergences in geographical location, history, and way of thinking, whichsometimes makes cross-language communication difficult and long sentences in EnglishChinese interpreting a difficult point as well. Therefore, attention should be paid to thedevelopment of certain strategies in interpreting so as to convey to listeners the exactmeaning of the source language while complying with the way of speaking or expressingin the target language. In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter is allowed some time todo some sentential analysis and restructuring of the sentential elements. By analyzing howthe interpreter does this restructuring in the case of the dialogue between Obama andChinese students, this thesis is aimed to present the effectiveness of restructuring strategies,which will be helpful to other interpreters faced with similar problems.
