Chinese-specific terms constitute a very important part of Chinese English. China’s rise in its global standing and influence boosts a more and more active participation of Chinese-specific terms in the global discourse. The change of the translational eco-environment of Chinese-specific terms inevitably brings along the changes in translation approaches, strategies and methods, too. Therefore, it is of necessity to reexamine the study of the English translation of Chinese-specific terms so as to promote China’s publicity.Eco-translatology views translation as a selection activity of the translator’s adaptation to the translational eco-environment. It provides a new paradigm for the study of the English translation of Chinese-specific terms. This thesis analyzes cases of translation of Chinese-specific terms in the English version of2013RGW by CCTB within the eco-translation paradigm, attempting to find the explanatory power of eco-translatology in the English translation of Chinese-specific terms and its practicality in choosing strategy and methods for the English translation of Chinese-specific terms in RGW.This thesis selects and classifies Chinese-specific terms concerning the economic and social development of socialist China in2013RGW for the case analysis. By analyzing such core concepts as "translation as eco-balance","translation as textual transplants" and "translation as adaptation and selection" in eco-translatology, this thesis examines the translated version from the aspects of the interplay between the translator and the translational eco-environment, and the translator’s linguistic and non-linguistic adaptation and selection of translation strategies and methods. Also, suggestions are made for some of the translated cases in the hope of stimulating a further study of the English translation of Chinese-specific terms. This thesis verifies the explanatory power of eco-translatology in the English translation of Chinese-specific terms and discovers that the English translation of Chinese-specific terms in the English version of2013RGW is the result of the interplay between the translator and his/her translational eco-environment. Besides, the translator can play his/her role in translation by improving, transforming and reconstructing the translational eco-environment in the cross-cultural communication. With proper selection of Chinese English in the translating process of Chinese-specific terms, the translator can preserve the Chinese characteristics in Chinese-specific terms while improving the world’s understanding of socialist China’s latest development, thus promoting socialist China’s national identity and ideology. However, as an emerging paradigm, eco-translatology has some limitations, for instance, in the actual translating process, it is impossible for the translator to adapt to all the components in the translational eco-environment. Moreover, adaptation and selection can’t be analyzed separately due to many overlaps in the translating process.
