With the mutual penetration of the Chinese and western cultures, Chinese parentsbegin to prefer the advanced foreign ideas of parenting for their one-child’s education.They gradually realize that children’s independence should be required from their earlyage. In this case, the English books about the parenting education become very importantmaterials that Chinese parents need to learn from the foreign advanced parentingexperience. Hence, translating such kind of books becomes increasingly important. Theauthor of the book, Raising a Self-Reliant Child is a well-known pediatrician and amother as well. She instructs parents to develop children’s independence in all aspects oflife from birth to age six according to her own experience. The purpose of choosing thisbook for translation practice is to provide the Chinese parents the advanced and scientificparenting methods, thus helping parents cultivate their children’s self-reliance in a correctway.The report is on the translation of the first chapter of the book, Raising aSelf-Reliant Child. During the translation process, these relevant theories are used toguide the translation practice and solve problems encountered in translation, aiming atseeking efficient translation strategies and methods and eventually improving English toChinese ability of translation practice.It consists of five major parts.The introduction part briefly describes the current situation of China’s one-childeducation and the purpose of choosing this book.The first chapter is the brief introduction to this book, including the main content ofthe book and the author, the characteristics of the language and structure, and themeaning and value of choosing this book.The second chapter deals with the whole process of translation, which includes thework before translation, the translation process and the task after the translation.In the third chapter, based on the theory of text typology of Reiss and the theory offunctional equivalence of Nida, the translator explores the characteristics and skills of thenon-literary translation. It analyzes the practical problems encountered in the translationprocess through specific cases and provides the relevant translation strategies.The last part of this report gives a summary of the thesis and expresses the gains and experience in the translation practice.
