With great charm, speeches enable people who read between the lines to enjoy the fascinating and fantastic moment as if they are on the scene personally, even though time has changed. The demands from target language readers, therefore, get more pressing. Higher requirements have been proposed for translators to break the linguistic and cultural chains, fully revealing the charms of speech. This report is based on the English-Chinese Translation Practice of The Exciting Moment-The Transcripts of Speeches and Debates of The57th U.S. Presidential Election Campaign, appointed by World Knowledge Press. It covers eight essential speeches transcripts of president Obama during57th U.S. Presidential Election Campaign, discussing primary translation methods suitable for speech style. The author signed Translation Commission Contract, according to which the author collected the text sources to be translated, allocates the tasks and makes schedule as required. By analyzing the text features of speech, this report has made a specific research into speech translation in the light of Functional Equivalence and Newmark’s Classification of Text. The report explores four questions worth discussing:the appropriateness, the elegance, the translation of proper nouns and rhetorics in speech. During the translation process, the translator puts great emphasis on the preservation of style of source text by making use of supplementation, Chinese idioms, ancient Chinese, annotation and the combination of literal translation and free translation etc, striving to make target text readers share the response very close to what the source text readers experience.During the whole process of translation, the bilingual ability, literary competence and aesthetic sensitivity are the key factors for success of speech translation. The author aims to improve the translation competence, theoretical ability and literary knowledge, contributes to the learners who are interested in speech translation.
