Report On Field Work Of Conference Interpreting And Escort Interpreting

As the trend of globalization continues to surge ahead, communication and exchanges among different countries and regions are becoming increasingly frequent. To promote more effective communication between people of different languages, translation, especially oral translation, namely, interpreting, was born at the right moment and had been playing a critical role on important occasions such as meetings between political VIPs, business negotiations, academic and cultural exchanges.For the past two and a half years of graduate study, the author, in accordance with the requirement of MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting) practice guidance, has proactively participated in multiple interpreting field work. This report is a summary of what the author has been involved for interpreting field work, which also shows the author’s capability of fulfilling tasks and resolving problems by utilizing corresponding interpreting theories.In analyzing each type of interpreting, the author will cite three in-person field cases as the fact support and analyzes the interpreting process with corresponding interpreting theories. As to conference interpreting, the author cites the following cases with different degrees of formality,"show design meeting of Superboy of Hunan Broadcasting System","railway traffic safety-report made by CSU Professor Tian Hongqi to Swedish energy efficiency delegation" and "Clean Energy Conference-between Environmental Protection Agency Victoria and Environmental Protection Department of Hunan Province"; the author analyzes these case with "interpretive theory","effort model" as well as "the spirit of teamwork". As for escort interpreting, the cases the author cites are of different working occasions, contents and intensity,"choreography interpreting of Up! Juniors of Hunan Broadcasting System","communication interpreting for lighting crew of Superboy of Hunan Broadcasting System" and "International Honors Program’s field trip to Xianjiahu medical station, Changsha"; the author utilizes "fidelity and untranslatability" and "the role of interpreter" theory to analyze the interpreting process together with the combination of "cross-cultural awareness". By participating in the interpreting field work, the author has gained abundant practical experience and discovered problems that are yet to be solved. This paper also points out deficiencies of itself and the author will make improvement through study and field work in the future.This paper includes introduction, three chapters and conclusion.The introduction describes the development of interpreting and its present situation and significance of this practice report.Chapter one introduces two types of interpreting the author has participated, namely, conference interpreting and escort interpreting. It describes interpreting tasks of each case, including background information, preparation, arrangement of interpreters and the main content.Chapter two conducts cases analysis of each type of interpreting in the aspect of pre-preparation and on the spot analysis. Furthermore, corresponding theoretical analysis are presented to describe the interpreting process and related problems.Chapter three summarizes the whole process of interpreting field work, summarizes interpreting competence, reflection on interpreting field work and future expectation of interpreting.The last part is conclusion which puts forward problems which the author can not solve at present stage and suggestions for future study as well.
