This paper is based on the translation of a book. The Honest Truth of Dishonest. The book is provided by the CITIC Press. Under the guidance of my teacher, I co-translated this book with a classmate. The Honest Truth of Dishonest is a popular behavioral economic book written by Dan Ariely, the author of Predictably Irrational. On the basis of interesting experiments, the author explains the difficult economic knowledge with daily and clear language. Because this book is written for common readers, the press required that the translation should be smooth and natural, and can make target readers have the similar feelings with the source language readers. Therefore, Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory was chosen as the theoretical guidance of the translation. Based on my translation practice, this paper demonstrates how to use various kinds of translation techniques to achieve functional equivalence. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part describes the translation task, the background of the task, the demands of the press and the stylistic features of the text. The second part is the description of the translation process, which includes pre-translation, while-translation, and after-translation. The third part is case analysis, which introduces the concept of functional equivalence and analyzes how to use translation techniques like addition, restructuring, conversion and so on to achieve functional equivalence and reproduce the original text to the greatest extent. The last part summarizes the translator’s inspirations gained in the process of translation.
