This translation material is selected from the work Teaching and Learning in theLanguage Classroom written by Tricia Hedge. The translator is responsible for thetranslation of the first chapter, which covers more than ten thousand words andintroduces the basic theory and question of teaching and learning. What’s more, thischapter, with strong practicability, is a perfect combination of theory and practice, providing valuable guidance for teachers to conduct their language teaching. In theprocess of translation, the translator, following the translation criteria of faithfulness andsmoothness as well as communicative translation theory, analyses the translationdifficulties from two aspects: word and sentence. This report consists of four parts: task description, task process, case analysis andpractice summary, of which the first two parts reveal a general overview of thistranslation practice, including the source of task, textual description, theoretical basisand so forth. The third part is case analysis, which is the core of the whole report. Itanalyses the translation difficulties in detail by using translation skills such asamplification, conversion of part of speech, division and so on. The last part talks aboutthe practice summary, containing the qualities a good translator should have, author’sweaknesses as well as what efforts should be made in the future.
