The C-E Translation Of Political Texts From Skopos Theory

With the continuous growth of Chinese comprehensive strength, China will playan important role in the international affairs. To some extent, the political text becomesan effective way to get acquaintance of the future of China. Therefore, the Chinesepolitical texts catch the attention of the world. However, the political text is differentfrom other literature texts because of its seriousness and objectivity. Furthermore, thedifferences become the hot and difficult spots that need discussing.This thesis takes the18th national congress of the communist party report as anexample which was delivered by Hu Jintao, Chairman of the Communist Party ofChina, on November8,2012. Based on the Skopos theory, this paper discusses thetranslation problems in political texts. The methods and strategies adopted in this textmay offer some appropriate suggestions for the future study on C-E translation ofpolitical texts.This thesis introduces the research background as well as present situation at homeand abroad. The background information helps us to know the research status ofpolitical text translation. Then, theoretical framework mainly introduces the Skopostheory which is the core theory of the German School and which draws a popular studyon the world scale. The author reviews, according to the time clue, the representativefigures, the origin and the development. The main ideas and the advantages of Skopostheory provide the solid foundation to help solve the political translation problems inlexical, style and rhetorical levels. Furthermore, this thesis studies the content, purposeand sentence features of18th NCCPC report. Based on the detailed analysis of theskopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, the author concludes various translation methods adopted in the process of translation, such as literal translation, paraphrase,foreignization, domestication, amplification, conversion and so on. With the applicationof those methods, the skopos of the political text translation is achieved. At last, thethesis summarizes the contributions and limitations of the research and offerssuggestions for the further researches.This thesis justifies the practical guidance of Skopos theory to the political texttranslation. And it is hoped that this thesis will provide practical methods in thetranslation of political text.
