A Report On Chinese To Englisn Simultaneous Interpreting For 2020 Alibaba Effectiveness Of Research And Development Summit

As global enterprises’ focus gradually shifts from traditional IT services to cloud computing services,the global cloud computing markets have maintained a steady growth trend.Benefitting from the advancement of the new infrastructure construction in China,Chinese local cloud computing service providers are growing rapidly and gradually trying to develop oversea markets.Cloud computing has great potential for future development.Therefore,the demands for Chinese-English interpreting in cloud computing industry will also continue to increase.This report is based on the author’s actual experience of interpreting for 2020 Alibaba Effectiveness of Research and Development Summit on June 12th,2020.The author acted as a simultaneous interpreter during the summit and provided simultaneous interpreting for the keynote speech of the summit.In the process of simultaneous interpreting,the author found that by applying Gile’s Effort Model,the author’s efforts could be distributed well and achieved good performance.The Effort Model theory plays an important role in guiding the interpreting practice.To successfully complete multiple tasks and achieve good performance during simultaneous interpreting,interpreters need to properly distribute and allocate their efforts.The author encountered three main difficulties during interpreting.The first difficulty was at the lexical level,including technical terms interpreting and wordy expression interpreting.The second was at the syntactic level,including long and short sentences interpreting.The third difficulty was at the discourse level,which consists of missing cohesive devices and hard to make predictions.The author applied the Effort Model into the interpreting practice to overcome these difficulties.At the end of this report,the author makes the summaries and points out the limitations of this interpreting practice.It is considered that long-term interpreting practice and applying appropriate interpreting theory are both critical to achieve high quality interpreting.It is hoped that this report can help interpreters to realize the importance of reasonable distribution of efforts in simultaneous interpreting,as well as the helpful role of Effort Model theory for interpreters,so as to provide a reference for interpreters in future interpreting practices.
