A Report On The Translation Of "Black Dahlia&White Rose"

This report was based on the author’s translation practice of―Black Dahlia&White Rose", a short story by American writer Joyce Carol Oates. In this story, Oatespresents the friendship between Norma Jeane and Elizabeth Short to reveal the mentaland physical trauma women have suffered in the traditional patriarchy society.Although portrayals are seemed to be negative, people get inspiration through reading.By translating the story, she intends to provide Chinese readers or somebody whointerested in translating the latest information about Oates and her work.However, this translation practice is made in a much different way fromnonliterary translation. To translate an English novel into Chinese, a translator mustnot only convey the core meaning of the original text exactly, but also reproduce theflavor, social background information and relationship between characters of theoriginal text. The relationship between the receptor and the text should generally bethe same as that between the original receptor and the source language text. That’salso the main point of Nida’s functional equivalence theory. Thus, the authorsummarizes the writing style of the story and analyzes the problems during hertranslation in light of―functional equivalence‖from four aspects: vocabulary, syntax,discourse and style． In order to get rid of language structure and reproduce themessage of source text in a natural way, she makes a selection of translation methodsbased on Nida’s idea about novel translation. And personally, the author hopes toachieve self-promotion on literary and translation during the process of overcomingdifficulties.
