Report On A Consecutive Interpretation For An Interview On Muhammad Naseer Akhtar

This article of investigation and analysis is based on a real case scenario interpretingpractice made by the reporter. In that practice, the reporter acted as the English-Chineseinterpretor of the interviewee, an English speaking Pakistani scholar. The Chineseinterpretation made by the reporter for the interviewer and the audience was very wellreceived.By reviewing and comparing the record of original on-spot interpretation with theafterward translation version, deficits of the interpreter are found. The inconsistencies of theChinese given by the interpretor(in this case is the reporter herself) on the spot, and thetranslated version made afterward lead to the question that why the interpretation with such alarge diffrence from the origional English can be evaluated as a well-received interpretatingpractice?In searching for the answer of the question, the reporter have found two main factors incausing the differences of the texts:the special dialect of the interviewee and the inner qualitylevel of the interpreter. Hence, a questionaire survy is designed for finding out how muchother interpreters are influenced by these factors. The designing of theses questionnaires arebased on the faults made by the interpreter with the intention of finding ways to minimize theoccurrence of similar mistakes. The designing procedure is strictly under the standardquestionnaire-making rules for getting true and reliable result.Professional website like “SOJUMP” is in application for its specialization in surveyproducing and distributing. Statistics even show that the more experienced an interpreter is, the more posibilityof him/her be exposed under this circumstance. But the fact that these obstacles are notpreventing these interpreters from fulfilling their duty may be explained by the essence ofinterpreting which is for helping the communication. As long as the communication is carriedon well, the deficits in languages can be relegated to inferior position in effects evaluation.Therefore, by analyzing the results of this research, tips can be given to “newbieinterpreters (like me)” as the following: In order to fill the gap between the ability of commoninterpreters and the language level and coping tactics needed by the clients, interpretersshould keep enhancing the level of both languages and enlarging their knowledge of relativefields and the possibility of a thorough preparation beforehand. And besides all that,interpreters should be of strong sense of duty. With sense of duty, an interpreter can beinitiative to the work and be flexible and adaptive to the requirements of the mission, hence bewelcome by the clients.Research techniques like analysis and questionnaire survey are adopted in this article.
