Far From the Tree:Parents, Children and the Search for Identity is a social science book written by Andrew Solomon, an American writer. The book was published in2012. The name of this book comes from an English proverb,’The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree’, which means that parents and their children won’t have much differences in physical, personality and beliefs, etc. Obviously, this book attaches its attentions on some families whose children are much different from the parents. Those families’genes can not be passed on. Those apples fall far away from the tree. In ten years, Andrew interviewed more than250families. Under the perceptions of ’Vertical Identity’and’Horizontal Identity’, he discusses the challenges and repays of parenting.The author selected a part of the tenth chapter of this book to do translation practice. In this part, the writer recorded much cases of juvenile crime, and he provided many perceptions to view juvenile crime. Because the book is not a literature work and it offers the readers much information, the author did the translation practice based on Eugene A. Nida’s theory of’functional equivalence’. By finishing this translation practice, the author improved the capacity of using the translation theories and skills to solve the problems appearing in the process of translation. During the practice, the author found that the translation difficulties were some terminologies and how to get a ’natural’and’the closest’equivalent translation. Meanwhile, the author learned that to do translation practice well, you should:do sufficient preparation; focus on every step in translating, including comprehension, expression and reviser; and use translation skills properly.The translation report is written according to this translation practice. The report is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is introduction, which tells the background, objectives, and significance of the project. Chapter two is description of the translation task, which includes the introduction of the author, and the analysis of the context and linguistic feature of the original text. Chapter three is description of the translation process, which presents the theory that is adopted and the steps of translation, such as comprehension, expression and reviser. Chapter four is case analysis, which discussed the difficulties in translating and the use of translating skills by case analysis. Chapter five is the summary, which concludes the lessons and problems.
