As a subgenre of the gangster films, the undercover dramaattracts audience by its suspenseful plots, strong conflicts, and tragiccharacters. When Infernal Affairs got great achievements, theundercover drama leaded a wave for a time, and formed a confirmedpattern gradually. In the films influenced by Infernal Affairs, theundercover agents must face all kinds of difficult situations, and theyhave to try their best to escape from spiritual predicaments. The factthat the undercover drama had flourished and became a metaphor ofHong Kong culture in the new century is related to the specialhistory and civilization of Hong Kong.By using the method of close reading and genre studies, thisdissertation analyzes the change of the narrative mode in undercoverdramas, the difficult positions of undercover agents, and the causesof their dilemmas. What’s more, it also tries to reveal the culturedemonstrated in these films, and the ways to evolve the undercoverdrama.It consists of five parts: introduction, chapter I “The narrativemode of Hong Kong undercover drama”, chapter II “Undercoveragents in difficult situations”, chapter III “Cultural connotation ofundercover drama”, and the conclusion.
