This is a translation report on The American People and Their Education: ASocial History written by Richard J. Altenbaugh, PH.D.,University of Pittsburgh. Thebook comprehensively examines the education of social groups as it evolved withineach time period from the perspective of social history. In this translation project, thetranslator selects the former five sections from chapter6, which primarily focuses onnational educational developments in the period following the civil war, especiallythroughout the west and south. With the dynamic equivalence theory as a theoreticalguidance in the translation process, the translator follows its principle and adopts thetranslation methods, such as word and voice conversion, order adjustment andsplitting to ensure the readability and fidelity of the target text, which has smoothexpression in the target language and faithful conveyance of the original meaning. There are four parts in the report. Part one presents the background, the significanceand structure of the project. Part two analyzes the source text of the project, includingits author and stylistic features. Part three elaborates the process of translation, pointing out the difficulties for translation and the translation theory applied in theproject, and further specific examples are given to illustrate how the translator adoptsvarious translation techniques to cope with the difficulties encountered under theguidance of the dynamic equivalence theory. The last part concludes theenlightenments and lessons translator gained in the translation.
