This is a project report on the translation of the first three chapters of an educational book,Reach for Greatness: Personalizable Education for All Children,written by Yong Zhao,a Foundation Distinguished Professor in the School of Education at the University of Kansas.The writer tends to expound his personal view on education in a plain and familiar style and provided the readers with a lot of typical cases,so this book is quite interesting and easy to understand.The selected text for translation covers the first three chapters.In this excerpt,the writer not only analyzes the weakness and problems of the present educational system,but also points out the profound significance of personalizable education.Personalizable education for the child is also part of Chinese educational tradition,and this book can bring about a new perspective into this thought.Based on the text analysis,the translator classifies the excerpt into informative text and decides to adopt communicative translation theory as the guidance.There are four parts in this report.Chapter one is a brief introduction to the translation report,including its background information,significance and objectives of the translation project,and the organization of the report.Chapter two is about the pretranslation preparations,including analysis of the source text,the guiding theory,the list of proper nouns and terminology,main tools as well as key and difficult points in translation.Then,chapter three is the main body of the report.Guided by Nida's functional equivalence theory,this part provides the detailed analysis of many typical cases encountered by the translator in the translation,so that the translator could better illustrate the application of many translation methods,such as conversion,inversion,division,amplification and the like.Chapter four is the conclusion part,in which the translator summarizes major findings and limitations in the process of translation,and puts forward some suggestions for the future translation of the similar materials.
