With the increasingly frequent communication in the field of science and technology between China and the west, EST(English for Science and Technology) translation plays a more significant role in promoting co-orperation in learning new scientific and technological information from other countries. Traditional strategies of EST translation attached too much importance to “faithfulness” to the source text and tried to preserve the original flavor. Most of the translated texts, however, neglect that the foremost consideration of EST translation is the accuracy of information transmission. After the intensive investigation and practical translation of the original text, the translator finds that Nida’s functional equivalence theory is most suitable for EST translation because of its closest natural equivalent requirement. This thesis is oriented to expounding the process of original text translation on the basis of the functional equivalence theory. The author argues that the reception of target language readers should be taken into consideration and the strategy of functional adjustment should be employed to fulfill the functional equivalence and ensure the accurate transmission and smooth expression of the original text.
