With the incessant improvement of China’s comprehensive national strength, the communication between China and the rest of the world becomes more and more frequent. Diplomatic interpreters act as a bridge in promoting state relations and enhancing mutual understanding between nations. Diplomatic interpreting makes the exchanges and communications between countries possible. Diplomatic interpreting covers a very wide range of fields, including national security, political standpoints, economy, trade, history and culture etc. As a diplomatic interpreter, translating the speeches delivered by the national leaders faithfully and accurately could convey the message from China to the world and connect China with the world.Interpretive theory thinks that interpreting is not a word-for-word conversion, but grasping the "sense" of the original language, and re-expressing it in according with the manner of the target language. Interpretive theory emphasizes the meaning equivalence, rather than the equivalence in the form of the language. Diplomatic interpreting requires a high level of the interpreter. At the same time, how to be a better "bridge" of communication is worthy to think about. Whether the interpreter could translate the diplomatic remarks faithfully and accurately turns to be quite important. After the dynamic analysis of interpreting process, Interpretive School puts forward the "faithfulness principle", which is performed in being faithful to the speaker, the target language and the audience. The main purpose of this thesis is analyzing the faithfulness of diplomatic interpreting from the perspective of Interpretive Theory, based on the speech delivered by president Xi Jinping in the India Council of World Affairs. First, this thesis elaborates the research of diplomatic interpreting at home and abroad. The following part introduces the interpretive theory and the principle of faithfulness. Then it analyzes the difficulties in realizing faithfulness while practicing diplomatic interpreting. At last, by analyzing the speech, this thesis summarizes some strategies under the guidance of Interpretive Theory to meet the faithfulness principle. |
