Diplomatic interpreting has played a very important role in China’s external changes, for on the one hand, we can convey our views, standpoints and policies to the whole world through diplomatic interpreting; on the other hand, through diplomatic interpreting, the world can improve their understanding towards China. Diplomatic interpreting put forward stricter requirements for interpreters; meanwhile, for interpreters, how to become a better "bridge" of communication is a question worth thinking about, and this is also a research area with important significance. The remarks delivered by President Xi Jinping on various diplomatic occasions are very representative and a study on the interpreting of these remarks is of great significance as it can serve as a model for other diplomatic interpreting activities and studies. The pivotal idea of the Interpretive Theory is "sense interpreting", namely, the interpreter should convey the sense of the speaker to the listener, not the linguistic form; and the interpreter undergoes the stage of "de-verbalization" while doing interpretation; in addition, to judge whether the interpreter conveys the sense of the speaker, we can resort to the standard of "faithfulness" proposed by the Interpretive School. The Interpretive Theory holds that interpreting is an activity involving three parties, the speaker, the interpreter and the listener. So obviously, diplomatic interpreting is affected by these three factors. To successfully convey the sense of the speaker to the listener, the interpreter should accurately interpret the explicit sense and properly convey the implicit sense of the speech delivered by the speaker. Therefore, this thesis intends to study methods suitable to be adopted in diplomatic interpreting from the perspective of Interpretive Theory, taking the interpretation of Xi Jinping’s remarks as the case. Through analysis of the interpreting of Xi Jinping’s remarks, the thesis proposes seven interpreting methods for diplomatic consecutive interpreting. These methods can be classified into two categories, namely, literal interpreting, sentence structure reconstruction, borrowing and information subtraction which can be adopted to interpret explicit information and logic processing, explanatory interpreting and information supplement which can be used to convey implicit information.Appropriate use of interpreting methods can help improve the quality of diplomatic interpreting and precisely convey China’s voice to the world.
