Around the QianDongNan area, the Water Drum Dance performed by people of the Miao nationality originated from Dagaowu Village at Jianhe, and has been exclusively preserved here. It is the distinctive dance of the village, the most special of which is to dance in the water surrounding the drums. The Water Drum Dance of Miao is deeply rooted in local life and custom, with profound historical origins and cultural implications. It has been added to The List of Intangible Cultural Heritage Items in 2006. Most of the researches on the Water Drum Dance of Miao are from the perspectives of folklore, P.E. and so on. This paper, as a case study, records performances of traditional Water Drum Dance in Dagaowu Village in detail mainly from the perspective of dance, through field investigations, with the path of cultural anthropology. The content of dances, pattern of manifestation, movements, costumes, accompanies and so on are included. On this basic, the paper explores the cultural implications behind the Water Drum Dance.The paper is made up with five parts:Introduction, expounds the background of the subject, the purpose and significance of the research, the method and status of the research. Chapter One, provides a description of the external survival environment and current situation of the Water Drum Dance, including the historical overview, current situation, and local culture and custom of Dagaowu Village where the Water Drum Dance belongs to. Chapter Two, objectively records performances of Water Drum Dance in traditional Water Drum Festival through field investigations, including the movements, performance areas, costumes, accompanies and so on. And analyses the typical movements with the dancing morphological analysis in ecology. Chapter Three, analyses the cultural implications in pattern of manifestation, movement features, functions, evolutions of the Water Drum Dance, taking the Water Drum Dance as the body. Conclusion, brings forward the author’s personal reflections on the Water Drum Dance’s future development in modern society, based on its current situation.
