As for primary stage of Chinese language learners, the English translation is the first step in learning words’meanings, which is the most direct one. Especially the learners of English native speakers, their grammar habits and way of thinking is bound to affect the understanding of words’ meaning in Chinese, even involving the effect of vocabulary acquisition.The main purpose of the English translation is to make learners master the meaning and basic usage of Chinese words. It is not the same as general definition of translation. English translation of Chinese words comprises "faithfulness", expressing the literal meaning, and "expressiveness", namely the appropriate fixed collocation and cultural meanings of new words as such simple pragmatic habits. By contrast of two layers of English explanation, the part of "expressiveness" is more underlined, which is also needs emergent improvement.In order to fulfill the possibility of comparison and analysis, this article consults Chinese Courses volume 1 (part â… , part â…¡), volume 2 (part â… , part â…¡), volume 3 (part â… ) and the New Practical Chinese Reader volume 1, volume 2, volume 3 in vocabulary lists one by one, finding the overlapping words and phrases that both appear in those two series textbooks.This article is divided into six parts. Chapter one is introduction, explaining the research background, significance, purposes and methods.The second chapter describes the reasons of the selected textbooks from the macro and micro perspective. Through the contrast analysis of the overlapping words, the attention is focused on English interpretation’s model and content.In the third chapter, by comparing the content of the English translation, the article first proposes the two features and advantages, and then makes a classification basically according to the parts of speech. Afterwards, this chapter analyses arisen common problems of the English translation with vivid examples and specific problems respectively in the two elementary textbooks of TCFL. At length, appropriate improvements are given.The fourth chapter bases on the thesis of translation between English and Chinese and cross-cultural communication theory, analyzing the questions proposed in the previous chapter from several aspects. The purpose is trying to find out the causes of the problems in English translation of Chinese words from the language’s origins and communicative influence on learners, with the examples in the textbooks.The fifth chapter puts forward with feasible advices according to different English translation problems, including the accuracy of selecting terms to translate new words and suggestion of reasonable improvement in translating verbs into English in details.Finally, chapter sixth summarizes the research results, one is inducing deficiency of this paper, second is trying to explore a reasonable mode in English translation of Chinese words. Moreover, the aim of this article is to improve the present mistakes and make a difference in vocabulary teaching of TCFL. |
