English acts as an interlanguage when teaching Chinese as a second language,especially at the beginning,and the current textbooks of TCFL(teaching Chinese as a foreign language)almost all translate Chinese words into English.Learners at the primary stage are weak in Chinese,thus they will learn new words by their English translation.Therefore,the quality of the words' translation will affect the learners' effect.This essay focused on three popular textbooks named Experiencing Chinese,Road to Success,and New Standard Chinese,combined error examples collected from HSK dynamic corpus to research the problems of English explanation.It was found out that the problems can be categorized into six types,nonequivalence between the meaning of English translation and the actual meaning of Chinese words,mismatch between the meaning of English translation and the context,negligence of Chinese words' cultural implications,simpleness of English translation of measure words and function words,and negligence of Chinese words' grammatical features.These problems have a negative effect on learners.In order to improve the learners' efficiency,this essay discussed the relation between the errors and English explanation of words in Chinese textbooks based on documents,error analysis,inductive method.Finally the essay come up with several suggestions to improve English translation and explanation,hoping to provide the writer of textbooks of TCFL with some references.
