Research On Interaction Between Culture And Creative Industries And Urban Renewal In Wuhan

Across the globe, the relationship between many of the city’s culture and creative industries and urban renewal is very close. But the study of the relationship between them is not perfect yet. The research of the interaction between them to provide theoretical guidance is the mostly needed. This paper builds a theoretical framework of the interaction between culture and creative industries and urban renewal based on the system theory and the theory of sustainable development. The theoretical framework focuses on perspectives of the economy, society, culture, environment and space by making a theoretical study and learning from multiple instances of different cities.Wuhan has proposed "Wuhan 2049", a development blueprint, imagining Wuhan to become a more competitive and more sustainable world city in 2049. In order to promote the development of Wuhan, this paper firstly grasps the current development of both culture and creative industries and urban renewal in Wuhan. After that, the paper explores the interaction between them based on the theoretical framework above. At last, this paper points out some shortages and gives some suggestions.Main points and conclusions:1. Interaction between culture and creative industries and urban renewal can be analyzed in terms of the specific economy, society, culture, environment and space. And the interaction is mainly reflected in two parts. On the one hand urban renewal can promote the development of culture and creative industries. On the other hand the culture and creative industries can act on specific contents of urban renewal and facilitate to sustainable development of the city.2. Culture and creative industries and urban renewal in Wuhan do exist interaction in five aspects according to the theoretical framework.The aspect of economy in Wuhan:On the one hand, the economic development promotes cultural consumption demand and the adjustment of industrial structure promotes development of culture and creative industries. On the other hand the development of culture and creative industries promotes the economic growth and optimizes the industrial structure.The aspect of society in Wuhan:On the one hand urban renewal provides intellectual support and promotes the rise of the creative class. On the other hand the development of culture and creative industries promotes social employment and produces a wide range of social effects.The aspect of culture in Wuhan:On the one hand urban renewal provides cultural resources by paying attention to protect cultural heritage. On the other hand the development of culture and creative industries protects cultural resources.The aspect of environment in Wuhan:On the one hand urban renewal facilitates the development of culture and creative industries by providing good environment. On the other hand the development of culture and creative industries improves urban environment and beautifies the city.The aspect of space in Wuhan:On the one hand urban renewal provides the space place. On the other hand the development of culture and creative industries optimizes the urban spatial pattern.3. The interaction between culture and creative industries and urban renewal in Wuhan is not perfect yet. Firstly, the culture and creative industries does not sufficiently promote urban renewal because of its small scale, its lacking of the protection and utilization of cultural resources and its imperfect layout of the industry. In addition, urban renewal does not sufficiently promote the development of culture and creative industries because of its serious brain drain, lacking of creative talent and imperfect urban environment. Problems should be solved in many ways. Accelerating the development of industry standards, trying to cultivate the professionals, taking advantage of the city cultural resources, creating a livable urban environment, guiding the rational distribution of culture and creative industries might be worth considering.4. This study is not perfect. The analysis of the interaction between culture and creative industries should be rich in content and be quantified. And the study of interaction between culture and creative industries in Wuhan needs to be further promoted.
