Recent years have witnessed rapid growth of both simultaneous interpreting (SI) and consecutive interpreting (CI). However, sight translation/interpreting (ST/I) still remains comparatively new. Its corresponding researches are far from enough. Although a few scholars have conducted some experiments to study the ST/I, as far as the author knows, few of them have considered to connect the functionalist theory with the ST/I, let alone the ST/I in business negotiation. Therefore, in the author’s opinion, it is of some great value to combine ST/I, a barely developed Interpreting method, with translation functionalist theory which has been beard a lot of fruits. The functionalist theory can be directive to the ST/I in business negotiation in some extent. In order to test and verify the directing effect of functionalist theory towards ST/I, a series of examples that might appear in business negotiation are been analyzed. The thesis tries to find out whether the functionalist theory will benefit the ST/I in business negotiation and as the way back, if the ST/I could feedback to the theory.Among all the scholars and experts who have made great contribution to the functionalist theory, four of them are indelible important. They are Reiss, Holz-manttari, Vermeer as well as Nord. In this case, their theories are described first and then examples occurred in business negotiation are given. Through the analysis on the examples it is clear that ST/I in business negotiation aims at helping two parties to communicate smoothly and efficiently, in this case, to accelerate the cooperation. At the same time, the functionalist theory focuses on the result. Therefore, to some extent, the ST/I in business negotiation shares the same aim with functionalist theory. Secondly, the documents occurred in the business negotiation can be classified into comprehensive texts. To deal with this kind of text, Reiss has brought about corresponding translation method, which is clarified strategy and concise strategy and that can also be applied by sight interpreters. The last but not the least is that to be a social intercourse, the business negotiation puts the result in priority, while the functionalist theory is also motivated by aim. In this case, it is possible to interpret one text into different renditions according to different demands. At this time, the comparison between ST/I rendition and translation rendition toward one same source text has also been brought about to emphasize the benefit of the functionalist theory. To sum up, the directive effect of functionalist theory to ST/I in business negotiation has been verified. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction to the whole thesis. It explains in detail the research background, purpose and significance as well as the thesis organization. The second chapter is the literature review. In this chapter the major parts of functionalist theory and their developing conditions has been mentioned. Meanwhile, the origin, progress, misunderstanding, main applying occasion of ST/I as well as related experiments are described. The third chapter mainly introduces the characteristics of ST/I and business negotiation interpreting. It can be divided into two parts. The former parts provides definition to ST/I and then by comparing and analyzing the differences between SI, CI and ST/I the principles and standard as well as difficulties are given. The latter part focuses itself on the features of business negotiation interpreting especially the polite principle. The fourth chapter is of vital in the whole thesis. This chapter introduces in a series of examples and by analyzing them the author aims to verify the directing effect of functionalist theory towards the ST/I in business negotiation. As the way back, the feedbacks from ST/I in business negotiation to the theory are also expected. In the last chapter the findings and summery will be provided. At the same time the limitations and recommendations for further study will be mentioned. The difficulties the author met during study and corresponding solutions will also be described for possible references. It is my sincere hope that this thesis will be a stepping stone for latter researches. If any inspiration or better discovery appears it will be my greatest pleasure.
