Abstract/Summary:
With the penetration of globalization, Sino-foreign cooperation in various fields is increasingly close. English has become the main language of communication, and translation is playing an irreplaceable role. Being called as English, however, English is not the same in different countries with regional characteristics. Especially in non-English speaking countries, English varieties people use have brought interpreters new challenges. It is a big task to overcome or reduce the impact on the interpreting caused by English varieties. Based on the author’s practice, taking cultural exchange on music as an example, this report is mainly focused on the analysis of the impact on the interpreting caused by difficulties in listening to and comprehending English varieties used by non-English speakers, cultural differences and the quality of interpreter. Besides, it also explores possible solutions to improve the quality of interpreting, and to guide interpreting activities in the future. This research is based on theories of Gile’s Effort Models, XiaDa Model, Grice’s Cooperative Principles as well as the Interpretative Approach.The body of the report is divided into five parts:Chapter One is a brief introduction of the project; Chapter Two introduces characteristics of this interpreting activity; Chapter Three is to analyze the problems in the practice; Chapter Four explores possible solutions from the verbal and nonverbal perspectives; Chapter Five is interpreting revelation:the author, combined with her experience and relevant research, highlights the guiding significance of the practice, and discusses the quality an interpreter is supposed to have as well as matters deserving attention.
