An Analysis Of The Effect Of Cantonese Dialect On Chinese To English Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of The Effort Model

Globalization enables interpreters to access English with all kinds of accents. However, another kind of accent is usually ignored--Chinese dialects in different regions. Although local dialects have lost their sway with the promotion of Mandarin, Cantonese remains the most reputed language in Canton because of its users’ sense of identity. The mix of Cantonese (dialect) and Mandarin (standard language) results in Mandarin with Cantonese accent. Usually the speech with Cantonese accent will bring a barrier to interpreters.Gile’s effort model breaks down the process of consecutive interpretation. Accent sets obstacles in the stage of listening and analysis. The core of the Gestalt theory is that humans’ psychological and conscious activities are "configurations" of transcendence which is "an integral process with internal patterns". They exist before humans’ experience and are prerequisites for humans’ experience. This theory makes it possible to get rid of the negative emotions brought by accent.This thesis explores the effect of remarks with Cantonese accent to consecutive interpreting through case study, which is also based on Gile’s effort model and supplemented by Gestalt theory. Based on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the experiment result, this thesis puts forward strategies to deal with remarks with accent, including getting familiar with accent, mastering background knowledge and readjusting psychology.
