Sudoku, the challenging logic puzzle that has fascinated the world since1986, is something both old and new to China, the birthplace of Luo Shu Square. Sudoku has not been introduced into China’s mainland until2007, and the basic terms and strategies of the game have been discussed and translated. However, the official translation, defective and lack of influence, only covers a little part of Sudoku terminology, leading to the unconformity of versions of translation used in online forum and in published materials. The popularization of Sudoku in China is to some extent blocked consequently. This thesis takes the Sudoku strategies and variants introduced in the book Extreme Sudoku for Dummies as the subject of research with a purpose to support China Sudoku Federation and facilitate the popularization of Sudoku in China. In the light of both previous findings on terminology translation and functionalist approaches, Sudoku terms are classified into four categories:Basic Sudoku terms and terms borrowed from other sciences, terms of Sudoku strategy and relevant concepts, terms of Sudoku variants, and flexible semi-serious Sudoku terms. According to their different functions and characteristics, the author suggests several translation methods such as fait accompli translation, creative translation, imitation translation, conception transformation and drawing method, in order to serve as possible reference for future translation.
