Phatic communion is essential for our daily life. It’s not so difficult for us to understand and use Chinese Phatic communion. However, the author realize something through the pedagogical practice that because of the discrepancy of mother tongues and cultural backgrounds, some Chinese learners usually can’t understand the rules of Chinese Phatic communion, then they can’t communicate with others successfully by using Chinese Phatic communion. In this paper, at first, we will review the previous works about Phatic communion. On this basis, we will begin to research the language ontology in the way of combining qualitative with quantitative. Afterwards, we will investigate how the students study the Chinese Phatic communion and how the teachers teach it with questionnaire. At last, we intent to give some applicable suggestions based on the investigation results. This paper can be specifically divided into six parts:The first part will review the previous works about Phatic communion from the perspectives of’the language ontology’,’the Sociolinguistics’,’the related theory’ and ’the related applications’ respectively. Among the research of’the related applications’, we will focus on the works about Chinese Phatic communion when it as a foreign language specially.In the second part, we will research the language ontology of Chinese Phatic communion. The main content includes:to define Chinese Phatic communion, to confirm the range of our study, to describe the functions and the characters of Chinese Phatic communion, and to classify Chinese Phatic communion. The most important work of this part is to classify Chinese Phatic communion according to the pragmatic function, on the base of our corpus. We classify the Chinese Phatic communion as10types:the greetings, the explaining, the appraising, the meetings and the partings, the ridiculing, the polite greeting, the appreciation and the apology, the blessing and the comfort, enjoin exhort and the request. We will also research the pragmatic background and the response of each type. In the third part, we will produce the questionnaires according to the research results of the second part, then distribute the questionnaires in order to investigate how the students study the Chinese Phatic communion and how the teachers teach it. The statistical findings show that although most of the teachers and students have recognized the significance of Chinese Phatic communion, they still can’t have a good command of it, regardless if they are teachers or students.According to the statistical findings in the previous part, we will give some suggestions to the textbook compilation from the perspectives of choosing materials and designing the exercises and activities. We will also give some suggestions to the teachers from the perspectives of improving their own qualities and the teaching skills. The fifth part is the sum-up about the whole paper.The innovation of this paper lies in classifying and counting our own Chinese Phatic communion corpus in the way of combining qualitative with quantitative, then describing and analyzing each type of it deeply. Moreover, in order to make the suggestions in the last part more objective and more targeted, we will not only investigate how the students study Chinese Phatic communion, but also investigate how the teachers teach it innovatively.
