| With the development of economic globalization, international exchange eventsbetween China and the rest of the world have become increasingly frequent. As animportant medium of message conveying, English interpreter plays an indispensiblerole in these cross-national activities. So the market for interpreting is ever bigger andspecialized in China, which is absolutely a driving force for the development andcultivation of Chinese-English interpreters. Meanwhile, challenges and difficulties areinevitable in the course of pursuing professionalism in the field of interpretation andhigher requirement for interpreter’s capability is imperative.In China, if an English lover dreams of becoming a professional interpreter, hecan choose a variety of ways to realize his dream, among which taking a degree ofMaster of Translation and Interpretation (MTI) in university is preferred by more andmore young people at the beginning of their interpreting career. After completing thecurriculum of interpreting on campus, the graduate students of MTI are always eagerto know how to strengthen their interpreting skills so as to grow into a competent andprofessional interpreter in a most effective way. Needless to say, taking interpretingpractice must be the centerpiece. However, for a novice as an interpreter, it is easy tolose his way in the course of exploration.Simultaneous interpreting (SI) with text is one type of sight interpreting. Theinterpreter listens to the speaker, while reading the script simultaneously and trying tofollow the speaker and orally outputs the interpretations. Compared with simultaneousinterpreting without text, simultaneous interpreting with text seems to be relativelyeasy because interpreters can read the information presented in text any time. In fact,text is really helpful for interpreters. If the text is obtained several days before thespeech,the interpreter is bestowed to have time to have a best preparation and verypossibly internalize the speech content.However, simultaneous interpreting with text also brings about special difficulties, and usually renders special challenge and even dilemma to interpreters.For instance, it is unpredictable whether the speaker will change his speech or not. Sothe attention distribution in simultaneous interpreting with text is more complicated.This report is based on the author’s personal experience of being a simultaneousinterpreter in The2ndWorld Ecological Safety Assembly (WESAII) which was held inBali Province, Indonesia, from December9th to12th in2012, when the author wasemployed as an intern translator and interpreter by the organizing committee ofWESAII—International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organization (IESCO). Thereport analyzes the features of SI with text through two cases of WESAII and furtherdiscusses the methods to guarantee the quality of SI with text from two aspects. Thefirst aspect is interpretation skills, which are concluded as “technical solutionsâ€. Andthe other is “non-technical solutionsâ€, including how to deal with emergencies thathappen during the interpreting, how to coordinate and cooperate with the interpretingteam and how to keep efficiency under high workload and pressure. And theteamwork of the interpreting team of this conference is highlighted in the report. Thereport aims to help novice interpreters know about the procedure of internationalconference, understand the features of SI with text and how to utilize variousresources to deal with simultaneous interpreting at international conference, based onthe author’s personal experience. |
