The author was commissioned by Yantai Tourism Bureau (YTB) with thesimultaneous interpreting task of Inauguration of China Panel Experts of PATA in2014.This report is based on this task and the speech given by the Director of YTB to discussthe problems that the author confronted during SI with text and solutions that sheadopted under the guide of theory of “Effort Models”.In the task review, the author describes the pre-interpreting analysis andpreparation. The pre-interpreting analysis was mainly the preparation of interpretingtheory and strategy, including the definition and characteristics of SI and theemployment of Effort Models to address difficulties in SI with text. Then, the authordescribes the steps and contents of pre-interpreting preparation from the perspectives oflanguage knowledge and thematic knowledge. In the chapter of interpreting process, theauthor lists the source speech and the author’s version of interpreting. In the caseanalysis part, different cases are chosen to demonstrate the use of tactics, which is toaddress the two major problem triggers: high rate of delivery of source speech and highdensity of information content. The tactics include reordering the sentence structure, segmentation, conversion and omission.Through the analysis of the task, the author finds:(1) Pre-interpreting preparationis of vital significance to a good simultaneous interpreting;(2) Interpreters should beaware of the difficulties of SI with text instead of underestimating the work for beinggiven the text. Although the text may reduce the listening and analysis pressure, itwould increase the sight interference and lead to the emergence of problems of high rateof delivery and high density of information content. Therefore, interpreters shouldrationally allocate the energy and adopt the measures to ensure the completion of task ina timely and accurate manner.
