A Report On Escort Interpreting For Shandong Huifeng Sports And Equipment Company Limited

This escort interpreting practice report describes one of the author's interpreting practice during her internship in Shandong Huifeng Sports & Equipment Company Limited. The author acted as an escort interpreter during one Egyptian customer's visit to the company. This report analyzes the difficulties encountered and the corresponding tactics in the detailed discussion of the order, new product visiting, production line visit and the welcome feast.The pre-interpreting preparation involves initial preparation and provisional preparation. In the initial preparation, the author describes specific practices as well as her experiences from four aspects which include: the materials of the company and product, the preparation of terminologies, the information collection of the customer and the preparation of dresses, notebooks and pens. In the provisional preparation, the author reviewed the background materials prepared in the initial process and also prepared some vocabularies of cuisines and tourist attractions. In the case analysis part,the author selects examples to analyze the specific problems encountered and corresponding tactics. When it comes to some unknown terminologies, the author proposes three kinds of tactics: repeating, omission and directly asking for help from the speaker. The author uses literal interpretation of the dish name and paraphrase to cope with the names of cuisine. Amplification and sentence reordering are adopted to cope with the sentences with incomplete and illogical information. Interpreters could also adequately use body language which may reduce their memory load and make communication more smooth.Through this practice, the author summarizes as follows:Pre-interpreting preparation is an indispensable part in interpreting practices. Full preparations can get twice the result with half the effort, which is especially true for the collection of background materials. Meanwhile, interpreters should also master some tactics to cope with problems on the spot. Interpreters should use these tactics flexiblywhich could fill their knowledge gap in some situations.
