Enclave to Urbanity is a book in English that describes the European architecture of Shamian from the end of the eighteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century from a foreigner’s perspective.Through the introduction of the architectural design and its layout,the reader can not only understand the European architecture,but also catch a glimpse of the relationship between Chinese people and foreigners at that time.Therefore,translating the book has important practical and historical significance.According to Newmark’s text typology,the chosen text is documentary,whose major function is informative.Therefore,communicative translation strategy which highlights its informativity is adopted.By combining some specific translation methods,the author tries to use the most straightforward language to convey information and facts that the original work is to convey.Through case analysis,the author tries to explore the application of communicative translation in this type of text from two levels:lexical and syntactic level.By translating such texts,the author tries to explore the application of communicative translation in documentary informative texts,enrich the research and corpus,and make a contribution to academic research in this field. |
