This is a translation report of English as a Second Language——Guide to Implementation for Kindergarten to Grade9, which was Published by Education Ministry of Alberta province, Canada in2007. The source text was compiled to regulate and guide learning and teaching English as a second language for kindergarten to grade9students. Its primary target readers are set to be teachers and school administrators. I chose to translate Chapter4:Teaching and Learning Strategies, because I used to be an English teacher and I’m eager to improve my teaching skills through examining western-styled teaching methods. The thesis has included two sections from Chapter4, including Section1: Identifying the Literacy/Language Levels of Individual Students and Section4:Lesson and Activity Ideas. As a typical educational publicity material, the guidebook shares the common traits of publicity-oriented materials yet also boasts features of their own in the language style, discourse features, word choice, sentence structures and etc.. From this point of view, studies on the translation of such materials are extremely crucial. This translation report thus analyzes its own lexical and syntactic features, defines translation difficulties such as English comprehension and language style, displays guiding translating theories of text typology and communicative translation and lists case analysis regarding specific translating techniques such as addition, specification and conversion of parts of speech. At last, translationese and English-featured Chinese are concluded as main challenges in E-C translation. The only way to solve these problems lies in further improvement in English and Chinese proficiency and meticulous revisions to make TL text in line with Chinese linguistic habits. By doing these analyses and practices, it is hoped that the translation of such materials can be more readable and accessible for the readership moving forward.
