The Omission Strategy In Simultaneous Interpretation In English And Chinese

This thesis focuses on the study of the types and application criterion of omission strategies.Based on Gile's Effort Model,the necessity and reasonability of using omission strategies have been elucidated.Next,the author redefines omission and proposes a criterion on using omission strategies,that is,unimportant and meaningless information as well as the ones that are unidiomatic in Chinese can be omitted only if all important information has been reserved and the meaning of all information has been unchanged.By analyzing corpora on simultaneous interpretation from experienced interpretors,the author draws a conclusion that there are five types of omission strategies which will be often taken in English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation,including repetition omission,given information omission,hypotaxis function word omission,modifier omission and enumeration omission.Meanwhile,it has been proved that omission strategies have been commonly used.Next,by conducting simulative simultaneous interpretation,the author analyzes the practical application value of these strategies and further subdivides them into eight types,including repetition omission,given information omission,hypotaxis function word omission,modifier omission,enumeration omission,unimportant sentence-initial element omission,parenthesis omission and logic confusion omission.Besides,the practice has also amply justified the important role of omission strategies.This thesis aims at helping interpreters to fully understand as well as flexibly and normatively use omission strategies so as to conduct simultaneous interpretation leisurely.
