A Report On The Translation Of Four-character Structure In Corporateannual Report

Along with the rapid development of China’s economy, and increasing exchange ofinternational trade and scientific research, more and more domestic products are pouring intothe international market. In order to have a place in the international area, businesses put aparticular emphasis on the promotion of corporate cultures, therefore it has become a trend inEnglish translation to reflect the corporate cultures in all aspects. There are variety of ways toreflect corporate cultures, among which corporate annual report is an indispensable one.The translation project analyzed by this translation practice report is selected from thefirst two parts of BOE Technology Co.,2014annual meeting report: the chairman’s remarkand the general manager’s speech. Cooperate annual meeting is the year-end summarymeeting. In the meeting, the senior managers and all the staffs attend it to retrospect what theyhave gained and lost in the past year, which lay a good foundation for the coming year. Theannual meeting includes: the opening ceremony, leaders’ remarks, one-year work summary,awards for outstanding staffs, a display of new products and the outlook of the future. Theannual report, with the function of propaganda, motivation and education, is to record andkeep the activities of the annual meeting in the form of written materials. And as a kind ofpractical writing widely used at present, annual report has its own linguistic features. The twoparts selected are both belonging to speech text, a special text, which, with strong subjectivecolors in the content, usually reflects the speaker’s own distinctive personality and style. Inorder to make a perfect expression of feelings and emotions, a great number of four-characterstructures are used in the original text, according to which, the author aims to explore thetranslation strategies and methods of four-character structures through three chapters:description of task, introduction of translation procedure and analysis of concrete cases.The use of four-character structure is a great feature in Chinese pragmatics, which could increase the readability of the original text, strengthen the rendering force and enhance thesense of rhythm. In the Modern Chinese Dictionary, four-character phrases are divided intoidioms and non-idioms. Idioms are also known as fixed phrases, which, with a fixed structureof four Chinese characters as most Chinese idioms do, brief in form and penetrating inmeaning, are often used in people’s daily life and mostly have origins, while non-idiomsare free phrases, those phrases that can be disassembled and assembled freely according towhat people need. According to the grammatical structures and syntactic rules offour-character text in Modern Chinese, the internal relationship between the four characters ina phrase can be divided into four kinds: modifier-modified relationship, verb-objectrelationship, coordinative or parallel relationship, and subject-predicate relationship. Thefour-character text in the original text will be divided according to that way of classification toexplore their translation strategies and methods respectively.While writing this report, the author analyzed the function, language location, thepurpose of the translated article, put forward the basic principles and targets of translation,and completed the case study section of this report in accordance with the characteristics ofthe original report. In the process of translation, according to the internal structure of thefour-character structures, the author classified these words, and explored the appropriatetranslation strategies and methods. Structural transformation and full conversion are two mainskills in dealing with the four-character phrases in the original text.Throughout the whole practice, the problems appeared can be encountered into twoaspects: one is how to reappear the original emotions during the translation process,considering the original text has strong subjective colors; the other is how to apply thetheories to practice wisely and use them to guide practice in writing the practice report.
