The Chinese Western Movie is one of the most influential movie genres worldwide, as well as an important national move genre at home. It has distinctive features of era and nation, for it emerged under a special social background when the reform and opening-up program and developing the Great Northwest drive implemented; it equips foreign features too, for it was affected by the cultural trend of Originalism and American Western Movies and absorbed certain characters. With more and more importance and recognition attached to the value of this kind of movie, a surging number of directors of the fourth and fifth generations began to focus on the loess land of the great Northwest in China and produced a batch of classic movies. In terms of graphics, those movies pay special attention to present local landscapes and folk customs and because of the profound cultural deposit it contains, this kind of Chinese Western Movie was given the name as Folklore Film of Loess.Folklore Film of Loess stands out in terms of color using. In most of the films, color form is given the priority, while the narrative content was less important, which draws much attention from the filming circle both abroad and home. When it comes to the tone of color, with a purpose to better picture the natural landscape and the backward local community, orange, yellowish brown, scarlet, tangerine and other warm-toned colors are the most commonly used. Besides, the changing colors in different scenes also create a certain atmosphere which further enhances the narrative rhythm. In terms of color pattern, Folklore Film of Loess is not only good at intensifying characters’ emotions, but also manifesting the symbolic and metaphorical meaning that contained in the props. In terms of creating atmosphere and artistic conception, this kind of film emphasizing on the blending of local music and color of the scene.The unique color rendering of Folklore Film of Loess actually contains a deep connotation of loess folklore culture. Visual impact produced by this color rendering derives from the application of concept of color-using exerted in traditional Chinese folk art, among which, the red and yellow with Chinese characteristics are the most impressive. The perfect blend of the tone of film with the tone of color, as well as the unique symbolic and metaphorical meaning of costume and props, showcases the distinctive characteristics of the loess land. Many movies even mainly rely on the repetitive changing of color to lift and enhance the film’s tone of emotion and content to better illustrate its theme. There is no doubt the special application of color in the Folklore Film of Loess made great contributions to the filming industry both abroad and home. However, while promoting the national characteristics it presents by using color, we should also acknowledge the limitations and problems it has and objectively view its value to a film.
