Chinese characters as the record of Chinese language, is the carrier to spread the long history and splendid culture of China. Teaching occupies of Chinese characters is playing an important role in the pedagogy of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Because of the square shape of Chinese characters, and the characters combine by shape态pronunciation and meaning, these distinguishing feature bring a big trouble for none Chinese native speakers,especially the learners of none Chinese culture circle. With the African students study in Hebei University as interviewees,the thesis aims at stating their motivation, strategies and difficulties of Chinese characters learning by adopting the method of questionnaire research and individual interviews. Based on the results of the survey, this thesis provides some advice for Chinese characters teaching.This thesis includes 5 chapters.The first chapter is the introduction which introduces the origin of the subject and expounds the purpose, meaning and methods of the study.The second chapter introduces the status quo of this research.The third chapter gives a detailed analysis of the Chinese characters learning of African students from learning motivation, learning difficulties and learning strategies through questionnaire research and individual interviews.The fourth chapter gives such advice aiming at the problems appearing in the Chinese characters learning of African students. Including pay intention to teaching basic knowledge of Chinese characters, leading them choose and use efficient learning strategy, teaching with Chinese culture, designing a variety of activities in teaching as well as using the multimedia on Internet.
