A Report On Translation Of The Measures Of Guangdong Province For Implementation Of The Law For Land Administration Of The People’s Republic Of China

With a local legislative text serving as the object of translation practice,this report explores the features of the language of local legislative texts, namely“professionalism of the vocabulary”,“stylization of syntactic structure”,“specificity of expression”,and “solemnity of language style” and introduces some opinions for the part of author of legal translation strategies from the perspective of Chinese-English translation. Legal effect and social impact of legislative text determine that the translation of legal text takes truthfully reproduction of the original writing intention as prerequisite, and therefore special attention should be paid to how to ensure the consistency between the translation and the source text in the translation process. This report takes the task description and case analysis of Chinese-English law translation as the theme, the translation strategy, namely static equivalence and five principles of legal translation, namely “accuracy and precision”, “consistency and identity”, “clarity and concision”, “professional language” and “stylistic consistence”as the main line, analyzing application of static equivalence in the translation of the local legislative texts from three aspects including lexical level, syntactic level, and textual level. At lexical level, the author introduces the principles that translators should obey in translating nominalization and modal auxiliaries. At syntactic level,the author explores the translation skills of “ 的 ”structures and passive voice. At textual level, the author thinks translators should stick to the principles of law translation and resolve the problems of cohesion and coherence of text in translation.The aforesaid strategy and methods is applicable to law translation, especially Chinese-English translation of local legislative texts.In recent years, provinces and cities in China pay much attention to legislative work, and legal system construction also plays a vital role in foreign exchanges.Against this background, to carry out studies on the law translation, and to explore the rule of legal language and the characteristics of the legal text completely conform to the trend of social development. The author hopes to make a little contribution to propagandizing China’s legal system construction and legal environment, and promoting Chinese-English translation of local laws and regulations.
