Under the international background of economic globalization, the exchanges and cooperation between various countries become much closer, and the demand of translation is increasingly strong, especially the translation expertise in highly professional areas. Medical translation, an important component of professional translation, is a significant method to bring in the medical resources abroad. Through translation, medical literature, papers and standards can be translated into different languages and understood by people from different countries so that the common sense in medical areas can be universally acknowledged. This report bases its analyses on translation of the Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes by American Diabetes Association. Three main issues are discussed, which contain the pre-translating preparation, translation study from lexical, syntactical and textual perspectives as well as imperative skills to ensure translation quality. This report, which is based on the translation of Standards, explores the necessary pre-translation preparation processes, including translation tools, translation style guide and translation workflow and focuses its analyses on the typical examples in this project, utilizing various translation skills, such as word conversion, voice transformation, sentence splitting and term consistency. Finally, the author summarizes the achievements from this project as well as the deficiencies, including the author’s professional background, translation consistency and creativity. The highlight of this report lays on that the author not only finds the problems, but also explores to offer the corresponding solutions with innovation based on translation practices and experiences. The report is intended to provide reference for the translation of similar medical standards, and deepen the understanding of ordinary translators and MTI students on medical translation as well as communication between medical translators so that the translation in professional fields can be further developed.
