This article is a project report about patent translation. With the quick development of modern science and technology, technical translation has already become an important part of international communication. Thus, technology translation, especially the technical Japanese translation plays a significant role in better learning and introducing foreign advanced science and technology.Patent Translation has clear logical structure, accurate expression and unique jargon, therefore, the translation not only should focus on the expression of statements, but also pay more attention to the understanding of the original, which requires the translator not only has proficient writing, but also knows the relevant professional background well. As a result, there are many aspects of patent translation project there worth researching and discussing. This report is based on the completion of the patent translation project, with the guidance of Skopos theory. By contrasting my own translations and expert translations, the report summarizes and refines the experience and skills of Japanese patent translation. The report includes four parts of project introduction, theoretical framework and case studies, translation skills and conclusions. The first part briefly introduces the procedure of the translation project, including project background, preparation for the translation, the process of the translation, post-translational modification and learning, feedback and the quality that the translators should master. The second part is about the preparations of the theory. On the one hand, I sums up the six months of patent translation practice, hoping to rise specific problems that encountered in practice to a conceptual level for future guidance. On the other hand, I choose Skopos theory as guiding theory of this report, and state the three rules of Skopos theory with example sentences respectively. According to the three basic rules, the translator should take full account of the purpose of the translation, and make right decision that which macro-strategy should be taken——literal translation, free translation or rewritten. The third part describes the experience and skills of patent translation, mainly summarizes the characteristics of vocabulary and grammatical structure used in patent translation. By using the method of comparative analysis, I compares the translation made by myself with the one which is made by reviewers, and identifies some problems that exist in the process of patent translation. The last part is the conclusions of this report. I conclude the benefits and experience learned from the project, points out some limitations of the report, and proposes the expectations of the research.
