Imperial Eclipse is a book about Japan’s strategic thought about continental Asia before August 1945 by Yukiko Koshiro, a professor at the College of International Relations at Nihon University, Japan. This paper is based on the translation of its first part. After the introduction of translating task, including its source, deadline, quality requirement, the paper reports the total translating process starting with the preparation before the translating, then analyzing the style and features of Imperial Eclipse, and at last, explaining the reasons why the translating principles of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance" proposed by Yan Fu are chosen to guide the total translation. Some of the parallel texts are selected to serve as reference materials. In the translation several translating methods are frequently used, therefore the third part gives some examples of how to realize a faithful and smooth translation with the help of these methods. They are mainly conversion and addition of expressions, and reconstruction of sentence structures. The paper ends with the conclusion of its difficulties and short points.
