The report is about the practice of Chinese translation for the excerpts of Rethinking Development, published by Bhutan Center Studies Press. Due to numerous long English sentences and complicated sentence structure, the key task of this practice is how to get rid of the constraints of the source language and try to make the translation accords with Chinese language features, which is also the difficulty of the task. On the basis of analyzing the language features of the source language in order to make the Chinese readers have the same response of the English readers, the author chooses functional equivalence proposed by Nida as a guide theory to discuss the translation skills of English words and long sentences, mainly English long sentence. Under the guidance of the theory, the author flexibly applies translation skills in this project, such as splitting, conversion, addition, linear translation etc. By the study and the application of functional equivalence in this practice, the author realizes it is hard to achieve complete equivalence; we should pursue the equivalence both in content and form to reproduce features of the source language to strengthen the readability of the source language. At the end of this report, the author summarizes the experience and problems of this project.
