A Report On C-E Translation Of Wenzhou Regional Metro S1 Line(Excerpts)

With the expanding scale of cities and fast-developing economic construction in China, the process of urbanization is also gradually speeding up. In order to alleviate and improve the traffic jam, metro lines have been established in many Chinese cities since the late 1990 s. Underground rail transit, as a remarkable symbol of modern traffic in international metropolis, is not only an ideal mode to solve traffic pressure, but also the pride of national strength in science and technology for a nation.This paper is a translation report on the signal system of Wenzhou regional metro S1 line. Technological and practical, the original Chinese text mainly discusses the composition, function and working principles of signal system in S1 line, involving a great many professional fields like urban planning, civil engineering, electromechanical equipment and information technology. In order to accurately convey the original information of signal system technology and make the target language readers better accept and understand the translation, the author chooses Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the theoretical guidance in the process of translation. Specifically, the author analyzes the lexical and sentential features of such a technological informative text and various problems in the process of translation from Chinese into English. With the aid of communicative translation theory, the author focuses on the translation solutions by listing a series of examples.In terms of the whole structure, this paper is divided into four chapters. Chapter One tells the main contents and features of the original text with a brief introduction about the background and significance of translation project. Chapter Two describes the translation process from three aspects, namely, the preparation work, translation, review and translation results. Chapter Three is the key point of the whole paper; it mainly discusses translation solutions about proper nouns, common vocabulary and long sentences with bamboo-like structure under the guidance of communicative translation theory. Chapter Four is the conclusion of the whole text; it summarizes the fruitful gains achieved by the author through this translation project on one hand, and objectively points the deficiencies in the translation process on the other hand.
